Through manipulating various media in his art making process, artist Xuhong Shang produces a visual representation of global concerns thatexplores the essential meaning and the conceptual value about landscape and nature in both Asian and European traditions.
By further discussion about the possibility and impossibility of detached and subjective perspectives on physical and metaphysical world, his work suggests a perpetual meditational experience through the constant recourse to logical abstractions. At the same time, it suggests a relentless action of impassioned imagination.
The works are, as a consequence, inherently ambivalent, settling for a tentative balance between various distortions of perception. They are not intended to claim to approach anything more concrete than reveling such an uneasy relationship. The truth for Shang’s work is not a representation of a fixed entity but rather an evolving process of producing the dialectics within polarities.
Xuhong Shang has exhibited throughout the world at various museums and art venues such as the Sotheby’s, Nexus Contemporary Art Center, Aldrich Musuem of Contemporary Art, Contemporary Art Musuem of Baltimore, and Kumamoto Fine Arts Museum in Japan. Shang is currently a professor of painting at the School of Art and Design of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, US.
